About Dr. Javier A. Pou, FACG
Dr. Pou earned the distinction of Fellow from American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) as one who demonstrates extraordinary achievement in the field of gastroenterology. ACG designates such physicians as Fellows, and FACG is appended to the title denoting fulfillment of the rigorous requirements. This honor is bestowed in recognition of significant professional achievement and superior competence.
Dr. Pou is board certified by American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine (2003) and Gastroenterology (2007 and 2017). He studied Biology at Bridgewater College in Virginia, and received his medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine (LCME).
He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at a Yale School of Medicine affiliated hospital (ACGME) where he received recognition from American College of Physicians, Internal Medicine. His fellowship training included three years of clinical gastroenterology and hepatology at the Department of Veteran Affairs and a major medical center in San Juan (ACGME). The training was comprised of special rotations and collaboration with the liver transplant center and gastrointestinal program at the Medical College of Virginia and McGuire Veterans Hospital.
Dr. Pou served as one of the first hospitalists at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Virginia, and was key in launching the gastroenterology program at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, Virginia. In addition to patient care, he has participated in clinical research, presented in national medical conventions, and authored numerous abstracts.
Dr. Pou is a member of American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and American College of Physicians. Shenandoah Valley Gastroenterology Center, PLLC is accredited by AAAHC, distinguishing the clinic from other outpatient facilities through its adherence to rigorous standards of care and safety.
Dr. Pou is fluent in Spanish and French, and his multicultural background and journey to make the Valley his home, continue to shape his approach to patient care.
